ABOUT ME
Mikey Ilkiw (b. 1985) is a portrait painter and experimental artist, focusing on multiple perspectives, representational minimalism, and trompe l’oeil through oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. He received her BA from Adelphi University with a concentration in Video Production.
Mikey is fascinated by trying to find a way to show movement in still paintings, distill likenesses down to as little information as possible, but also staying playful. About his artwork he says, “I try to have jokes or riddles in my paintings; I’d like it to be some kind of game. Some people who look at my work might not get all the references or implied meanings, but it’s a lot of fun when people are on the same wavelength.”
Mikey Ilkiw’s work is regularly exhibited in galleries across Long Island. He is currently a Resident Artist at the Art League of Long Island, and on the Board of Directors of the Long Beach Art League. He can typically be found at life drawing sessions or baseball games.
Mikey lives in Seaford with his wife and two sons, whose energy and imagination reflect the same sense of play that often comes through in his artwork.
MY APPROACH TO CREATING
-

Inspiration
Ideas come from everywhere and start with a note or a doodle.
-

Elaboration & Experimentation
Building upon inspiration by adding, recreating, changing in as many ways as I can.
-

Artwork
Choosing my favorite experiment and then beginning. Typically more experimentation occurs but it’s more difficult to not worry about ruining the piece.
